You’ve probably heard about Jordan Belfort, the Wall Street trader played by Leonardo DiCaprio in Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. The collapse of the world econo- my in 2008 depended on him and others like him.
It is less likely you’ve heard of Charles Bluhdorn, the “Mad Austrian of Wall Street,” as he was one described by Life. Starting in the 1950s, this businessman, Austrian by birth but a New Yorker by adoption, contributed to defining the capitalist system that, a few decades later, people like Belfort would come close to destroying.
In a Manhattan identical to the one that provides the backdrop for Mad Men, the Madman bought and sold companies as fast as Muhammad Ali could knock his ri- vals to the ground, including Madison Square Garden, the most famous sports arena in the world, which he himself had contributed to building.
“The best way to convince me to do something is to tell me that it’s impossible to do it,” he would always say. Judging from all the things he accomplished in his life, he must have run into a ton of skeptics: from entertain- ment to construction, from one coast of the United States to the other, everyone knew that when Bludhorn got it into his head that he wanted to enter a sector, everyone
else was going to be forced to compete for second place. Bluhdorn had everything, and when a person has ev- erything, whatever the historical period they were born in, the risk is always the same: to fulfill one’s dreams, and once they have been fulfilled, to no longer manage to sus-
tain the theater of existence.
